The next wave of the natural hair care movement celebrates diversity in hair and encourages people to embrace all hair types and textures, from tightly coiled afros to loose waves. This inclusivity has helped many people feel more confident and comfortable with their natural hair and has challenged the narrow beauty standards that have been perpetuated for far too long. In addition to promoting healthy hair and celebrating diversity, the natural hair care movement has significantly impacted the beauty industry. More and more natural hair care products are being created to meet the growing demand and make these products more accessible.
Hair types ranks #1 within the hair concerns category. Consumers are looking for brands to talk about texture and understand their specific hair concerns as it relates to their hair type. Brands should also be aware of trending products such as hair serums, hair oils, scalp serums, and bonding oils to target consumers in this space.
Understanding Type 1 Hair
Type 1 hair is characterized by its naturally straight texture, lacking any significant curl or wave patterns. This hair type is the straightest on the spectrum and covers hair that is fine and fragile to coarse and thin. Within Type 1, there are three subcategories:
Type 1A Hair - Straightest hair type within the Type 1 category. Typically very fine and lacks any kind of curl or wave and is very resistant to curling or styling. Gets greasy and weighed down quickly at the root and difficult to add volume or texture.
Type 1B Hair - Hair is straight but has a slight wave and medium texture. It can be shiny and sleek but can also be prone to frizz, flyaways, and greasiness at the root.
Type 1C Hair - Waviest of the straight hair without being definitively wavy, and has a fine texture, but a high density. Susceptible to frizz and flyaways and tends to deal with knots, tangles, and drier ends.
